Facebook’s Origami – A photoshop for interaction design
Origami is a free prototyping toolkit for Interaction designers. The toolkit is a set of library patches for a Mac application called Quartz Composer, which is used for creating dynamic motion compositions. Many interaction designers use Quartz Composer to create prototypes, but since it is not a prototyping software by itself, the workflow has been a bit complex. But now with Facebook’s Origami, the workflow improves drastically and gives more options to take control over every detail of the interaction.
Most designers usually use static mockups to communicate their ideas, this method shortfalls in clearly conveying the actual idea which most of the time involves interactions. And you have come across various prototyping tools that helps to create interactions, but most of them provide a set of templates and styles of animation that can only go so far to give a basic idea of the interaction. Using Origami and Quartz Composer, you can customize the interactions with values and conditions such that the output shows how the final implemented product should look like. This method dosen’t involve any coding as it is a node based visual programming environment where you connect patches with conditions and values to get the desired interaction.
Origami comes with templates for iPhone, Android and Windows phone. Since it is a Mac application, it is not available for Windows machines.
